There’s been an underlying passion for photography inside of me for as long as I can remember. As a child I yearned for cameras and I even shadowed my older sister when she became a photographer. I spent a lot of time looking at other photographer’s work. I spent a lot of time taking a lot of bad photos. During college and shortly after that passion felt pretty stifled. Apart from taking the occasional selfie, I didn’t photograph much. Then, I started reading blogs and I saw these gorgeous images on the internet. Women from so many different backgrounds were sharing gorgeous images from their own lives. I wanted in, so I started a blog.
My Photography Journey
I think I had the “build it and they will come” mentality when I first set out on this adventure. I laugh at that now because I know just how much work goes into this little “internet hobby”. I know I’ve grown in so many ways since the very beginning, but I hope to never stop growing. However, 3+ years into it and I still don’t have those gorgeous picturesque photos I thought I would.
I’ve been working on my photography a lot lately. I’m worked on my shot compositions, manual shooting, finding my favorite light, and even discovering my favorite editing style. I’ve been shooting some gorgeous photos behind the scenes, but still none of them told the stories I wished they would. They weren’t me.
365 Day Photography Challenge
I’m excited to say that I’ve started a Year In the Life 365 Day Photography Challenge. I’ll be sharing week by week with you here on the blog in a new series: Year in the Life. I’ll be shooting my real life each day, unposed using just my camera and editing software. My goal is the tell a story with the photos – my story – in a documentary style collection.
I’ve been so focused on growth for the past year that I almost forgot what makes this place so special – the fact that it’s a reflection of me and my life. That’s the only thing that makes it unique and it’s the only true way to set myself apart. It’s the reason I started this blog in the first place – to share my life.
Year in The Life – Week 1
Santa brought John a quad-copter for Christmas and it has been so much fun watching him learn to fly it. I’m a firm believer that no one gets too old for toys, and this is proof. While flying in the yard, a neighbor stopped by with his two small kids to watch from their lawn mower (true story). Afterward, John terrorized his parents’ Golden Retriever by flying it just out of her reach.
This little lady has always had pretty severe separation anxiety. I’m thankful that her anxiety comes in the form of packing herself in my suitcase and not in the form of destroying my house. Seeing her in my bag always reminds me of just how much I mean to her, and how much she means to me.
I don’t think this drive will ever get easier. 12+ hours in the car is no easy feat. I’m so thankful for good weather, and beautiful sunsets like these. It feels so good to be home again.
There are certain pieces of furniture that I’ll never part with: the coffee and end tables I grew up with, the wine cabinet my dad hand built for me, and this pie chest that once belonged to John’s great grandmother. Pieces like this completely make up our home for me. They are constant reminders of where we’ve come from and the special people who helped mold us.
This New Year’s Eve was different than most. We stayed in and watched a marathon of Shameless to pass the time. We had coffee at 8 pm because we were on the verge of falling asleep. We made it, though!
It was another low-key day on Winter break today and I spent all day working on a special t-shirt quilt. We’ve been doing a lot of downsizing and have gotten rid of a lot of clothing. The pieces included in this quilt were just too special to part with entirely.
A cold dreary day calls for snuggles indoors. Teddy is the perfect snuggle-companion. She’s known by many names these days: Ted, Fred, Freds, Freddy, and a host of other spin-offs. I always want to remember how unconditional her love is.
