This post is sponsored by Paula’s Choice Skincare. All opinions are 100% my own.
Since I’m not purchasing makeup this year, I’ve given priority to my skin and hair. It has taken me quite a while to finally feel like I’m giving my skin everything it needs. Since starting this new routine, my skin is softer, the tone is more even, and my scars have dramatically improved. So, today I’m sharing my updated skincare routine with you.
I’m always skeptical when skin care companies claim to do “x, y, and z”, and I have to see for myself. So when the girls at PRIMP (Pretty In My Pocket) reached out with a sponsored post opportunity for Paula’s Choice Skincare, I knew they had to wow me for me to go through with the campaign… and I’m pretty impressed, hence why I’m here talking to all of you about it.
Now, I have to say… this skincare routine is definitely more high maintenance than I’ve done in the past, but I’ve done it consistently like this for 3 full weeks and I don’t think I’m going back. Call me high maintenance. My skin has been loving me.
One thing I really loved about the system was that it came with a handout of the order of application AND included stickers so you could put them on the products for ease of use.
My Skincare Routine – Morning
Step 1 – Cleanse
The first thing I do in the morning is cleanse my face. I use the Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Softening Cream Cleanser for normal to very dry skin. I have struggled to find a happy medium with a cleanser that doesn’t dry my out, but doesn’t leave a film on my skin, either. I have been pleasantly surprised with this one.
In the past, I didn’t cleanse my face in the morning, so this is a fairly big change for me.
Step 2 – Tone
After my try my face, I apply the Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Enriched Calming Toner. My past experience with toners has not been good, which is why I haven’t used one since high school (!). I always thought toners were wrong for my dry skin, but this one is milky and doesn’t leave my face feeling stripped. I hate that feeling.
Step 3 – AHA Gel
Once my skin is no longer wet from the tonor, I apply the Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 8% AHA Gel Exfoliant. I put a dime size amount on my ring finger and then dab small amounts all over my face. Then I smooth it out using my ring fingers, taking it down the neck, too. After I apply it, I wait for it to try completely. In the meantime I eat breakfast or drink my coffee.
The AHA gel is a liquid exfoliant and it increases cell turnover rate. Alright, so… Paula’s Choice has not claimed this, but I really feel like the AHA gel is the main reason I’ve seen such a drastic improvement with my scarring. (Remember when my dog ripped my face open on Christmas day? Yeah… that scarring.) Here’s a before and after photo of the area:
FYI – these photos weren’t retouched in any way… and now I feel like all of you know my deepest secrets after being THAT up close and personal. ? But you can clearly see the scar under my nose (on my cupid’s bow) in the left photo. On the right, it’s seriously diminished. Redness is reduced, and the actual scar is LESS.
Step 4 – Serum
One the AHA gel is completely dry, I apply the Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum. This serum hydrates and forms a protective barrier on the skin – yes please. Protect that skin!
Step 5 – Moisturize
After all that is set, I apply my daily moisturizer – the Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Replenishing Moisturizer. It has an SPF of 30, which I love in a moisturizer and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy, but it definitely hydrates.
I follow up with my regular makeup routine!
My Skincare Routine – Night
First, I remove my makeup with a magic makeup cloth. Then I repeat steps 1 through 5 from my morning routine.
The big difference is in step 6.
Step 6 – TREAT
As you’ll see from my before (and after) photo, I have discoloration. I absolutely hate these brown spots. I saw my dermatologist last year and he wrote me a script for a really expensive lightening gel. I never filled it and I was determined to try a less expensive, over the counter option. So, I now treat those spots with the Paula’s Choice Resist 25% Vitamin C Spot Treatment. I simply put a dab over each spot and let it sit there for 5 to 10 minutes. Then I delicately pat it in.
Let’s be frank, I’d be lying through my teeth if I told you these brown spots disappeared in 3 weeks. Not a chance. That’s not how these products work, but I believe with continued use I’ll see a difference. When I apply the cream I can definitely feel it working. It doesn’t burn, but there’s some feeling there. Plus, this option is a lot more affordable than that $200+ gel the doctor ordered. I need to give a genuine chance.
Once a week I treat my skin with the Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Mask. It’s super hydrating. Throughout the week I’ll dab a few spots under my eyes or around my nose if I’m feeling like my skin isn’t quite hydrated enough.
Paula’s Choice Skincare Review
Overall I am absolutely happy with this Paula’s Choice skincare routine. My face definitely feels softer and overall better taken care of. The crusty spots I used to get around my nose and in between my eyebrows are no longer a concern, but I don’t look like a greaseball and the products wear nicely underneath makeup.
The left photo is “before” and the right is 3 weeks after continual day and night use. Obviously, there’s still some work to do, but I feel confident that my skin is on the up and up! These things take time to really work, but I’m impressed with the improvements I’ve seen in such a short amount of time. I only had one zit the entire 3 weeks of testing, and of course, the aftermath is documented in these photos. 😛 Great timing, zit. Great timing.
I’m excited to continue with this skin care routine and will keep you updated on how it’s going!
