Work on blog stuff.
Go to my “real job”.
Get home and scarf some dinner.
Work on more blog stuff.
Unfortunately, being a millennial hustler means that your days are filled to the brim with things that need to be crossed off your to-do list. Time to unwind is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle. No one can work-work-work-work-work all the time. Did you just sing Rihanna in your head? You’re welcome.
So what if you can’t jet off to Destin at the drop of the hat like you did when you were in college? You can take out your planner and jot down some dates for a semi-local, weekend par-tay! That’s exactly what I did when my girlfriend Paige and I decided to take the party on the go and have a girls weekend. Fun is fun… even if it’s not spontaneous.
In fact, the older I get the more planning for trips becomes a necessity. I have responsibilities. I have a full time job, a blog, a husband, and two little pups that rely on me. Planning a weekend away – let alone a party – requires some planning… and here’s how it’s done:
How to Throw an On-the-Go Party
What to do a Month Out
Decide on a Location
First thing’s first; you need a party location! After discussing the options, Paige and I decided we’d like to get away to the hill country. When our first winery tour plan fell through due to logistics, we decided to keep things weird in Austin. It was clear after we discussed what we’d like to do while we’re there that we needed a hotel right in the center of it all in the downtown area.
What to do a Week Out
About a week before the trip be sure to stock up on all of the things you’ll need to take with you. For example, I hopped over to Walmart so I could buy groceries and stock up on some goodies for post-party goodie bags.
I needed to pick up snacks so we had something to munch on, toiletry items, some beauty bits, and because staying healthy is always a priority*, I picked up the Centrum Vitamints in Raspberry.
What to do a Day Out
Because hotels aren’t known for their full-sized kitchens with utensils, I decided to prepare the snacks the day before our trip. I took my favorite cheese – colby jack – and cut it into cubes. I washed blackberries and put all the snacks into baggies for easy travel cooler storage.
Pack the Essentials
I am arguably the worst packer ever, but I’m getting better. Lists make things much simpler. When you’re planning a party on the go, you not only have to pack clothes, toiletries and such, but you need to pack party supplies, too!
For our girls weekend I made sure to not only pack my party clothes and cosmetics, but I also packed snacks for the party spread in a portable cooler, wine and wine glasses (but you can choose sparking juice if you’re not old enough or into wine), and all the makings of the day-after goodie bags!
I put a lot of thought into those goodie bags. I’ve partied with Paige before, and things can get a little carried away so I wanted to make sure that I included things that would be useful, and also make us smile when the party was finally over.
In the goody bags I included makeup remover towelettes for easy cleansing, Chapstick to help nourish lips that have way over spoken their daily word limit, bandages for blistered feet from too much dancing, under eye concealer (because these #bags are not Prada… they’re from partying too late) and Centrum Vitamints to give our bodies the boost they needed back into a healthy lifestyle*.
What to do the Day Of
When you get to your destination, check in at the front desk and unload. This is the perfect time to freshen up before going out, too! One of my favorite things to do when checking into a hotel is to organize all of my luggage (weird? Maybe.) and then stretch it out – riding in the car is terrible for your body!
Most of our party was totally on-the-go, but because we anticipated some late night girl talk, I set up our hotel room in true party fashion. I took out the pre-cut cheese, fruit and – our beverage of choice – wine. I laid all of the snacks out on the desk and then I put out some simple decor to make it festive. I used accordion fans to liven it up. I then turned the bathroom into an in-room spa with face masks and cold cucumber eye compresses.
then all that’s left to do is…
