It’s officially September. The department stores are running specials on sandals and shorts to make room for vests and boots. There may not be a crisp in the air, yet, but there is certainly a fall feeling going around. Last month when we packed up all of our worldly belongings for the foreseeable future, I carefully boxed away most of my makeup. Luckily, I kept a few great fall transition beauty products in reach and I’ve been using them, exclusively, for the past several weeks. These products act as kind of capsule wardrobe, but for fall makeup.
The Fall Makeup You Didn’t Know You Needed
When I packed away my makeup it was the
beginning of August in Texas (read: hot as *insert your favorite four letter word*). I knew I needed to keep some light makeup with me – light colors, textures, and coverage – but I also knew that the fall transition was coming. I needed to make sure I had products to get me into fall – makeup with warmer hues and fuller coverage.
If you need a refresher on what a *capsule* is, here’s a summary:
A capsule is a collection of a few items that have versatility and meet all of your needs. For example, you might remember my capsule wardrobe posts last year. I took 20-30 clothing items and I made them stretch. It’s a way of living with less, but feeling like you have more. A good capsule (makeup, clothing, or otherwise) meets all of your needs and lets you express yourself without requiring a hoard of products.

Fall Makeup | Face Products
Because we’ve been moving from place to place I needed makeup that was easy (and safe) to pack. I nexed my glass bottles of foundation and opted for plastic squeeze tubes wherever possible. I love my MAC Pro Longwear Foundation, but I was afraid it would break and make a huge mess in my bag. I chose my second favorite fuller coverage foundation (and a drugstore STEAL): Covergirl Ready Set Gorgeous liquid foundation.
For concealer, I kept my favorite dark circle corrector, under-eye brightener, and blemish concealer. Ok. So, I’m a little bit high maintenance in the concealer department. The heart wants what it wants, ok?
Fall Makeup | Eye Products
I think eyes are truly the biggest “bang for your buck” when it comes to transitioning makeup for seasons. Earthier tones come to mind, like rich greens, burgundies, and caramels. When Nordstrom had their big sale this summer, I scooped up a gorgeous palette from LORAC. Unfortunately, it has since been discontinued, which is a bummer because it’s the perfect fall palette for eyes and cheeks.
Anywho, I also kept my absolute favorite eyeshadow quad from BareMinerals: The Designer Label. It has 2 nudes: a caramel and apricot, and 2 gorgeous greens: one olive and one hunter. It’s simply gorgeous and the formula is out of this world. The Ready Eyeshadows from BareMinerals are perhaps my favorite eyeshadow formula of all time.
P.S. What makes the greens in The Designer Label really pop is the NYX Jumbo Stick in Rocky Mountain Green worn as a base.
Fall Makeup | Highlight and Contouring Products
I’ve been skipping contouring altogether mostly, but I made sure to keep a box of Hoola bronzer out for light sculpting. On the cheeks I’ve been wearing a mauve blush from the discontinued LORAC palette, and a bit of champagne pop as a highlight, occasionally with Essence Snowflake underneath.
Fall Makeup | Lip and Lash Products
The finishing touches are easy: mascara and a lip color. I’ve been kind of loving nude lips lately and my favorite has been the Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick in In Demand, although this color has caught my attention and I will make it mine by the middle of fall! I accidentally packed up my favorite mascara… so I’ve been using up the Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume, and I have to admit… I’m not a huge fan of it.
And the final piece… is a light dusting of my favorite – Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Ethereal Light. This is a splurge item, for sure, but I feel like it blurs imperfections and gives my makeup an extra “oomph”.
I’ve been doing pretty well with the products I’ve kept, but I’m missing my collection these days. Until I can reunite once and for all with my vanity, I’ll be putting together looks in my head with products packed away… It’s never too early to start thinking of my fall-winter transition makeup, is it?
What are your favorite summer to fall transition makeup products? For me, I think this year is all about the greens.
