I like to think that being Ted’s “person” is the best training possible for parenthood. Look – I get it – having a dog isn’t the same as having a child. Teddy comes with her own challenges, though. She’s what I like to call a high maintenance pooch, but not necessarily in the same ways you might be thinking. She’s never sick, she doesn’t tear things up (unless you’re a stuffed toy), and she has full control of her bodily functions… if you know what I mean. By all of those accounts, she’s a great dog and of course I love her, but she has tested me in ways I never thought imaginable.
Is My Dog is Training Me for Parenthood?
You Want Me to Eat What?
First of all, she’s the most picky eater I’ve ever met – human children included. Not only is she picky about what she eats (and I’m happy to report she’s still LOVING all things Freshpet), but she’s picky about how she eats. Apparently, plating matters to Ted. For a while, she wouldn’t eat out of a bowl, so she was eating off of a plate. Now, she won’t touch her plate, but chows down from a bowl.
The pooch has got preferences! Unfortunately, some preferences change faster than you can say “no pre-processed meat powders”! Oh, wait… that’s just Freshpet. Real U.S. meat is the number one ingredient. Ted and I both can appreciate that!
Second, I’m never alone. She follows me everywhere. If I’m in bed, she’s in bed. If I’m in the yard, she’s in the yard. If I’m in the bathroom… well, you get the point. This dog is no more than 2 feet away from me. Most of the time, it’s really sweet. There are times, though, like 12 hour car rides to Texas, where having her on top of me for that long is just plain torture. She’s fluffy and snuggly, so… silver lining?
Can I Have a Snack?
I’m not sure why I ever have to mop my floors… Teddy vacuums up every little particle of anything remotely edible. If we’re cooking in the kitchen, she’s always right under foot. Last week, I was honing my chopping and zesting skills while preparing one of our HelloFresh meals, and she was particularly alert just waiting for something to drop.
Joke was on her that day, though. I don’t play around when it comes to fresh ingredients that I didn’t even have to pick out myself! I LOVE that HelloFresh delivers step-by-step recipes and ingredients right to my door, and I’m not about to share with Ted!
Mom. Mom! Mom?
That feeling you get when your child says your name 100 times in a row? That’s my greeting each and every time I step in door. Yes, she’s happy to see me, but after 10 minutes of incessant barking, my nerves are shot. I feel pretty strongly that all the patience I’ve built up from this will come in handy when we have kids.
Healthy Input, Healthy Output
In general, though, I think the number one way Teddy is preparing me for parenthood is by learning to consider what we put in our mouths. A healthy diet matters for a healthy life. It matters for dogs and it matters for us. HelloFresh has really made preparing healthy meals so much easier for me because everything is portioned out and the meals are ready in about 30 minutes or less.
HelloFresh pro tip: I save all of my HelloFresh recipe cards, pop them in a page protector, and put them in a binder for easy access! I love having my favorite recipes all in one place because I frequently go back and make my favorite HelloFresh meals with ingredients I’ve purchased for myself.
Freshpet gives me the opportunity to feed Teddy the best thing next to a home cooked meal. I can pronounce all of the ingredients, and it makes me feel great to know that I’m not pumping her tiny body full of additives or any of the “meals” (like cornmeal – yuck). No matter how you spin in, food is one of the most important ingredients for a long, healthy life. That’s why HelloFresh and Freshpet are the perfect pair! They both bring the power of fresh food so that you can focus on the really important things… like playing a game of fetch. I’m so glad we started on this journey with HelloFresh and Freshpet.
If anything can prepare you for parenthood, I think it has to be loving a dog. My heart could burst every time she looks at me with her big brown eyes, when she snuggles up to me in bed, or when she brings me her toy with a grin on her face. And hey – maybe this is a silly comparison- so, ask me again in a couple of years. 😉
